Morpho-physiological traits and leaf surface chemicals as markers conferring resistance to sorghum shoot fly (Atherigona soccata Rondani)

چکیده

Sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata, causes substantial economic losses in sorghum globally. Cultural practices and host plant resistance are effective measures for mitigating the caused by fly. Therefore, we evaluated 32 genotypes consisting of a set 10 restorer lines, CMS (cytoplasmic male-sterile) lines their respective maintainers exhibiting resistance/susceptibility to fly along with resistant susceptible checks under field conditions. The traits such as leaf glossiness, sheath pigmentation, percentage plants deadhearts number eggs per were used morphological markers selecting during rainy post seasons 2016 2017. test material was also subjected biochemical analysis (total soluble sugars, protein tannin contents), while surface chemicals analysed GC–MS identify compounds associated differed significantly all traits, except season. ICSB 458, ICSA/B 467, 487, 14037, IS 18551 ICSV 93046 exhibited moderate high levels based on deadhearts, total eggs. 84, 14024, had low deadheart incidence, higher amounts condensed tannins, phenols lower content compared genotypes. Thirteen unique identified from extracts which resistance/susceptibility. While HPLC revealed that Protocatechuic coumaric acids present most genotypes, but greater ones. findings study highlight importance various conferring these can be use breeding programs.

Inheritance of Resistance to Sorghum Shoot Fly, Atherigona soccata in Sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench

Sorghum production is affected by a wide array of biotic constraints, of which sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata is the most important pest, which severely damages the sorghum crop during the seedling stage. Host plant resistance is one of the major components to control sorghum shoot fly, A. soccata. To understand the nature of gene action for inheritance of shoot fly resistance, we evalua...

Introgression of Shoot Fly (Atherigona soccata L. Moench) Resistance QTLs into Elite Post-rainy Season Sorghum Varieties Using Marker Assisted Backcrossing (MABC)

Shoot fly (Atherigona soccata L. Moench) is a serious pest in sorghum production. Management of shoot fly using insecticides is expensive and environmentally un-safe. Developing host-plant resistance is the best method to manage shoot fly infestation. Number of component traits contribute for imparting shoot fly resistance in sorghum and molecular markers have been reported which were closely l...

Oxidative Enzyme Changes in Sorghum Infested by Shoot Fly

This research investigated the role of oxidative enzymes in the defense response of sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (Poales: Poaceae), to the sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata Rondani (Diptera: Muscidae). Changes in polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activity and total protein content were observed in resistant and susceptible sorghum genotypes in response to A. soccata feeding. Resista...

Multiple-resistance to sorghum shoot fly, spotted stemborer and sugarcane aphid in sorghum

Sorghum is one of the most important cereal crops in the semi-arid tropics. Several insect pests damage it. The possibility of identifying genotypes with multiple resistance to these pests and transferring the relevant genes into high-yielding varieties and hybrids has been considered as an attractive approach to reducing yield losses. A set of 12 cytoplasmic male-sterile and maintainer lines, ...
